Glasgow University Medical Research Society Virtual Conference 2021

We are excited to be hosting this conference virtually and have invited doctors leading their fields to deliver a series of talks and workshops on topics at the cutting-edge of research a, hoping to engage even more students in academic medicine. It's also a prime opportunity for those interested in presenting original research of their own to an audience - with cash prizes to be won!

We welcome medical students and early year trainees (FY1 + 2) with an interest in evidence based medicine.

Professor Matthew Walters


Professor Matthew Walters serves as Head of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and also holds an honorary appointment as a consultant physician whose primary clinical and research interests lie within the field of treatment of cerebrovascular disease. He is a CSO Clinician Scientist and Senior Lecturer and his current research projects includes the evaluation and treatment of disordered cerebral perfusion, epidemiology of stroke disease and outcome assessment after stroke. He has won multiple grants including support from the Chief Scientist Office, Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, the Translational Medicine Research Collaboration and British Heart Foundation. Prof Walters has published nearly 140 papers in prominent journals including Nature Genetics. In 2020 he was appointed MBE for services to the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Professor Alan MacFarlane 

The ACCESS study - Anaesthesia for arteriovenous fistula formation

After graduating from Glasgow medical school, Alan undertook his anaesthetic training in the West of Scotland, concluding with a year-long fellowship in regional anaesthesia in Toronto. He returned to Glasgow to take up a consultant post in 2009, as well as an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow. He is an Editor for BJA Education and represents RAUK at the NIAA. He is also on the RA scientific subcommittee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and the board of the European Diploma of Regional Anaesthesia. he has been Treasurer of RAUK since 2015. Alan is interested in RA and outcomes and has published widely in the field of RA.

Miss Carly Bisset

Miss Bisset is a General Surgery Registrar and Research Fellow in the West of Scotland. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Medical Education at the University of Aberdeen, exploring the influence of surgeon personality and risk-taking on decision making in colorectal surgery. Miss Bisset is the Junior Trainee Representative for the West of Scotland Surgical Association and Honorary Registrar at the University of Glasgow Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons.

1. Developing an Academic CV

Dr Nichiolas Chia Yew Kong
BMedSci MBChB MSc MRCS
Specialist Trainee in General Surgery

Dr Chia Yew Kong is a specialist trainee in General Surgery based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He has a strong interest in evidence based surgery and medical education. He has run the building a CV for very early career academics worship for the GUMRS for a number of years now.

2. How to present a research paper/audit

Dr Andrew Croall

Dr Andrew Croall is a Glasgow graduate with an interest in academic surgery and is a current Academic Foundation Year 2 Doctor at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. He will be speaking on how to present research.

3. Guide to Audits 

Dr Georgios Kourounis

Dr George Kourounis graduated medical school with distinction in 2016. He is currently completing his Core Surgical Training at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and is involved in local medical education as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Since graduation, he also completed a year as a Clinical Research Fellow in General Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and earned an MSc with distinctions in Surgical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh. He has been published in international medical journals. His interests lie in general surgery, medical education, and evidence based medicine.

He will be taking us through how to undertake an audit. 

4. Systematic Review Secrets - a practical guide of steps to success

Dr David Henshall

Dr David Henshall is an FY2 doctor working in Edinburgh on South East Scotland's Academic Foundation Programme. He has interests in Neurology, Nephrology and collaborative research. His current research interests include the clinical characterisation of monogenic stroke investigating the contribution of patient genetics to disease risk, and recruiting participants to the Recovery Trial. He has produced over 20 peer-reviewed publications to date and he is heavily involved in Medical Education.
